Wortley is split into three areas: New Wortley, Upper Wortey and Lower Wortley. New Wortley is the closest to Leeds city centre and the surrounding industrial areas of Armley and Holbeck. Upper Wortley is in between Armley and Lower Wortley. Lower Wortley is the furthest from Leeds city centre and is closer to Farnley, Leeds Outer Ring Road and the M621.

The industrial revolution helped Upper Wortley's development. While there were some industrial sites in Wortley, Wortley is also close to Armley and Holbeck which were heavily industrialised, therefore benefitting from their industrial sites too.
