The History of Burley

The name Burley is said to have derived from the Old English term for ‘fortification, open space’. During the industrial revolution, Burley transitioned from a village to red-brick, back-to-backs, commercial and industrial buildings. Original village features are still evident at the junction of Burley Road and Haddon Road.

The local population remained working class for many years but the growth and development of Leeds University brought an increasing student population to the surrounding areas of Leeds, including Burley. Eventually, student halls were built along parts of Burley Road.
