WAX TREATMENT
There are tried and tested methods of removing excess wax from an ear and there are a number of alternative methods (some good and some bad and some possibly dangerous too). Excessive ear wax can cause pain, tinnitus, infection and hearing loss through blockage. A one minute otoscopic examination (looking down your ears with a magnifying lens and light) will identify if wax is causing any of these problems. We can then remove the wax for you immediately by microsuction.
The audiology clinic at 2020 Hearing regularly refers clients to the GP where usually a nurse will carry out a water irrigation treatment. This involves a jet of warm water that should loosen the wax and backwash it out. The GP/nurse will stipulate that you must put oil into the ears morning and night for up to two weeks to soften it first. In some cases it can take a number of visits especially with impacted wax. The clinic at 2020 Hearing will almost always recommend microsuction above all else due to it being the safest, most effective, quickest and most comfortable method of removing wax. Microsuction is conducted by a fully qualified and experienced audiologist.

EAROL

If there is some wax in your ears but not enough to warrant microsuction then this can often do the trick.
A Brief Overview of How Microsuction Works
Usually, microsuction does not even require pretreatment of ear drops. A fully qualified audiologist, will look into the ear canal through a microscope (either fixed or with glasses) and using a very fine suction device at low temperature, will safely remove the wax. We will take before and after photos of your ears so that you can be sure that your ears are completely clear.
SAFE – Microsuction is the method preferred by medical staff and patients alike for guaranteed effective removal of wax.
PAINLESS – Microsuction is extremely comfortable and in most cases the wax can be removed in minutes.
QUALIFIED – We specialise in microsuction and the process is completed only by fully qualified audiologists with additional training in microsuction techniques.
What is Earwax ?

Some people produce excessive wax and some people retain more wax than others and that may require frequent microsuction treatment.

Created by glands near the entrance to the ear canal, earwax is clear when it is first produced. The purpose of earwax is to lubricate and to reduce infections in the ear canal.
There is a natural outward movement of the skin lining the ear canal. This movement causes the wax to take with it debris from the ear canal which turns into the orangey colour you see.
Many factors could determine how much wax we produce:
- Diet
- Age
- Lifestyle
- Personal anatomy
- Genetics
